EU hydrogen energy development goals criticized as unrealistic: "Based on political will, not solid analysis"
On July 17, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) said that the EU's hydrogen energy development goals are unrealistic and are unlikely to be achieved despite nearly 20 billion euros in funding. According to the EU's 2022 target, the EU will produce 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen and import 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030. However, the European Court of Auditors said in a report that these targets are based on political will rather than solid and reliable analysis, and the EU is still far from achieving these goals. Another EU target to install at least 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolysers by 2030 was an idea floated in documents by a hydrogen industry lobby group, the auditors found.

Saudi Aramco acquires a low-carbon hydrogen company
On July 16, local time, Saudi Aramco announced that it had signed a final agreement to acquire a 50% stake in Jubail-based Blue Hydrogen Industrial Gases (BHIG) to develop low-carbon hydrogen business and expand new energy investment portfolio. The company has not yet announced the transaction amount. BHIG is a wholly owned subsidiary of APQ, a joint venture between U.S. Air Products and Palestinian Qudra Energy. Under the agreement, Saudi Aramco will also receive options to purchase hydrogen and nitrogen from BHIG, prior to standard closing conditions. After the transaction is completed, Saudi Aramco and APQ will each own 50% of BHIG. Saudi Aramco said the investment highlights its ambition to expand its new energy portfolio and develop low-carbon hydrogen business. The investment in BHIG will help the development of the low-carbon hydrogen network in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Aramco plans to leverage its capabilities in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and its technical expertise in hydrogen to build a vibrant, low-carbon hydrogen market as the foundation for the energy system of the future.

Hydrogen-powered vehicles are designated as vehicles for the French Olympics, causing controversy
Recently, 120 scientists jointly called on the Paris Olympics to abandon the Toyota Mirai car, saying it undermines the green image. On July 9, Musk criticized the use of hydrogen in cars as stupid and supported electric vehicles. On July 16, France Hydrogène refuted that hydrogen-powered cars meet specific needs and are a viable solution. France Hydrogène emphasized the advantages of hydrogen-powered cars in heavy and intensive transportation, and pointed out that the original letter did not take into account the heat and oxygen recovery in hydrogen production. The agency said that hydrogen-powered vehicles and electric vehicles each have their own roles in decarbonizing transportation and are not in direct competition.
